Breast Crawl

Both of my children used breast crawl to get their first feeds and I am really pleased that they did as I am sure that it is partially why we got off to such a great start with feeding.

What is breast crawl? Well it is pretty much as the name suggests. You place the baby on your tummy and let them make their own way up to the breast and latch on and feed. The baby ‘crawls’ to the breast.

Yep, all by themselves!

Honestly it is possible. I’ve watched many You tube videos and as I’ve already mentioned I did it myself. The first time you see it you won’t believe your eyes. We think of human babies as being completely helpless unlike the rest of the animal kingdom whose babies are born and within a very short space of time are walking, feeding, swimming or doing whatever skills it is that they need to learn. In general we assume that babies do not have a clue about feeding and that we must put them into a certain position and hold their head in a certain way and that they must latch on in a certain way etc. In fact if you put a new born baby onto its mother’s tummy it will, like other animals, find the food for itself. It is in the interest of the survival of the species for babies to know how to feed.

For the record my children didn’t adopt the textbook way of feeding yet were fully breastfed. From all of the mummies that I spoke to the ones who ‘tried’ the hardest to get their baby to feed in a text book way were the ones who found that they couldn’t breast feed.
